Understanding PRP Therapy for Foot and Ankle Injuries

A Regenerative Option for Long Lasting Relief

For individuals experiencing chronic foot or ankle pain, sports-related injuries, or slow-healing tendon conditions, Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy may offer an advanced, non-surgical treatment option to support recovery and relieve symptoms. In this blog, Foot & Ankle Center of the Rockies will explain how the treatment works, what it can fix, and how to know if it’s right for you.

What is PRP Therapy?

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is a regenerative medical treatment that utilizes the body’s own biological components to enhance healing.

  •       The procedure involves collecting a small sample of the patient’s blood, which is then processed in a centrifuge to isolate and concentrate the platelets—cells that are rich in growth factors and play a key role in tissue repair.
  •       Once prepared, the platelet-rich solution is carefully injected into the area of injury to promote natural healing, reduce inflammation, and encourage regeneration of damaged tissues.

How PRP Works for Foot and Ankle Conditions

PRP therapy is increasingly used in podiatry as a regenerative solution for soft tissue and joint injuries that don’t respond well to rest, physical therapy, or medications.

Common conditions we treat with PRP include:

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Achilles Tendinitis
  • Ankle Sprains and Ligament Injuries
  • Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction (PTTD)
  • Peroneal Tendon Injuries
  • Arthritis in the Foot and Ankle Joints

By delivering a high concentration of growth factors directly to the injured tissue, PRP can help:

  • Reduce inflammation
  • Stimulate tissue repair
  • Shorten recovery time
  • Delay or avoid surgery

What to Expect During PRP Treatment

PRP therapy is performed in-office and typically takes less than an hour.

  •       After drawing your blood and preparing the plasma, your podiatrist will use ultrasound guidance (if needed) to precisely inject PRP into the affected area.
  •       Since the treatment uses your body’s own cells, the risk of allergic reaction is extremely low.

You may experience mild soreness after the injection, but most patients return to light activity within a few days. Full healing often occurs gradually over several weeks, as your body responds to the regenerative effects of the plasma.

Is PRP Right for You?

PRP therapy is not always the first step in treatment, but it can be an excellent option if conservative care hasn’t provided enough relief.

At Foot and Ankle Center of the Rockies, we customize each treatment plan to your specific condition and goals. If you’re looking for a non-surgical solution for foot or ankle pain in Colorado, we’d be happy to discuss whether PRP is right for you.
